Meat and Bone Meal
Meat and bone meal (MBM) is a powdered material that is made from meat and meat products drawn from high street butchers, supermarkets, abattoirs, slaughterhouses and pet food makers. The materials that go into it have been subject to the Government's established stringent tests to ensure that they are BSE-free.
MBM is produced by sterilising meats and bones to produce a material which looks like tea leaves. This process makes it as safe as the soil in your garden. It is blended to a tight specification which is agreed with the Environment Agency.
MBM is categorised as 'carbon neutral' (click here to find out more) by the Government which means that they see it as a material, which can be used without adding to greenhouse gas levels. For us at Lafarge it is a great material to use as a fuel as it has a high energy content and is a good replacement for coal.

In countries like France, cement manufactures have been making major gains by using MBM as a fuel for many years. Please click here to view the countries which are already using MBM as a fuel in the cement-making process.

Our Aberthaw Works in South Wales we have carried out a trial using MBM and have plans to trial it also at our Hope Works in Derbyshire.
