Processed sewage pellets are made from sludge
that remains after sewage treatment and can offer the cement-making
process an alternative fuel which has a similar energy value to
coal. PSP is what is known as a 'carbon neutral' or 'bio mass' fuel
- click here to find out more.
The UK generates almost a million tonnes of sludge from sewage treatment each year. Dried processed sewage pellets (which resemble pet food
and have been heat treated to make them as safe as garden soil) are a new product for which the main uses are fertiliser and fuel.
Having carried out a succesful trial in 2003, Lafarge Cement is
now successfully using this fuel permanently at its Cauldon
Works in Staffordshire, where scrap tyres have also been used succesfully
as a fuel for 13 years. |
