Jointing refers to the working of cement mortar joints to give a finished face before the mortar has fully hardened. Pointing means the raking out of joints and pressing into them a surface mortar. Jointing is more durable, but pointing provides the opportunity for using different coloured mortars. Jointing and pointing can be finished to create different decorative effects that add distinctive character to brickwork. The Blue Circle product range covers premixed mortar that only requires the addition of water; and enhanced and general-purpose cements with differing characteristics to suit various mortar performance requirements.

Floor screeds are floated or trowelled smooth to receive the final wearing surface. Screed consists of a layer of mortar made from Portland cement and clean, sharp concreting sand laid on a concrete slab. Alternatively a 10mm aggregate concrete may be used. A range Blue Circle products are ideal for screeding applications, whether incorporating Ordinary Portland Cement or enhanced cements with special performance characteristics to meet specific requirements such as high early strength, improved workability, etc. For large-scale applications Lafarge Cement UK also supplies Blue Circle cements in bulk delivery.

Posts for fencing and railing can be set in cement sand concrete, for which many Blue Circle cements are suitable. However, Blue Circle Extra Rapid cement is ideal because of its fast setting properties, whilst Blue Circle Postcrete, a premixed Ready-to-Use product, has been formulated specifically for quick and easy setting of posts, without the need for mixing – just add water.
